Broelsch pioneered the liver transplant surgery. He studied medicine at the University of Cologne and Friedrich-Alexander-University, Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 1984 he was appointed to the University of Chicago and became the chairman of hepatobiliary transplant. In 1991, Broelsch managed the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. From 1998 until his suspension in 2007 Broelsch was Director of the Department of General and Transplant Surgery of the University Hospital Essen.
